I understand how critics found it derivative, but being derivative of Alien, The Shining and Hellraiser can't be that bad, surely? I'm also surprised to see how much it divides opinion here. I was quite surprised to see the absolute panning it got at the time. Despite all that though, It's a good film. The denouement of a huge evolutionary cycle plays itself out. What started out as a kind of psychological horror set on an abandoned space ship (amazing) turned into a daft Hellraiser clone for the last 45 minutes. Now the spacecraft is an isolated crucible traveling through space. That's what made it really jarring when all of a sudden it changed into a monster movie full of Americans punching each other while shouting 'motherfucker'. I liked the idea of the ship not actively murdering them, but tricking the crew to their deaths through hallucinations and the like, as with whatserface falling off the gantry into the gravity drive room. I liked watching the crew slowly descending into madness through their own sins and regrets - the parallels drawn with Dante's Inferno. Story-wise, I loved the idea that the ship had come back from another dimension with a sort of evil life force all of its own. The sound was great, on a good surround set, the jarring strings and background noises swirling around the room worked really well. ![]() During a press junket for John Wick: Chapter 4, the actor told IGN that he was open to playing Captain. It gets a bit daft towards the end, but that's as much to do with the writing as anything. Laurence Fishburne may lead another rescue mission in space. The set design and lighting is spot on and very atmospheric, and the ship designs are also a highlight. ![]() The detail in the scene where Sam Neill is in the cramped, bright green service corridor off the gravity drive room is astounding. Here we can make the comparison that the Event Horizons experience in the dimension of the Gravity Drive to one a crew might experience during the collapse of the Gellar Field in the Warp. I finally got to give it my undivided attention, as an adult, on a good home cinema set-up and on the whole, really enjoyed it. I never read any reviews at the time, but I've always had a vague recollection of it being a decent movie. I first watched it as a VHS rental while I was at university, was probably shit-faced and didn't really give it much attention or thought. It's interesting reading back through this thread, and indeed, reading around how the film was received upon release.
